Best Heat Pump Brands & Models Reviews

It won’t matter if you use any of the top heat pump brands available on the market out there while the house itself doesn’t boast such efficiency in giving you at least a chance to save energy every year. It goes without saying that your house requires proper insulation in its attic and walls, caulk around windows and stripping around doors, proper sealing for the ductwork (throughout the house and in the attic/crawlspace as well), and programmable thermostats to control temperature automatically. Only after these factors are met can the best heat pump function the way it should to begin with.

What Top 2019 Heat Pump Brands Have in Common

Even then, finding a heat pump brand that works the best in your interest would be a challenge. Heat pumps are offered in a wide array or varieties, which in turn is affected by any numbers of variables such as sizes, for example.

The size of a heat pump that you should eventually corresponds to the size of your home; the bigger the house, the larger heat pump it requires in order to fully supply the entire rooms within it with proper temperature management.

If you are looking to purchase a heat pump to install in your home, there are things to take into account. Simply put, for a heat pump of any brands to qualify as being regarded the best, it must have said factors.

First, it must come with quality parts. What good a heat pump can be if it doesn’t have what it takes for easy and convenient replacement?

The entire product might be advertised as being the best in its class but if its parts are below average it’s worthless. It’s easy to measure; if you have to shop for replacement of any kind while the product has just been installed, then it’s a dud. It has everything to do with durability and the ability to help you save more money in the long run.

However, a heat pump is a man made product nonetheless, hence it is bound to break down either during the duration of use or caused by faulty production process. This is why you need to find out if the product comes with satisfying warranties. Make sure the warranties cover the basics and find out about the things they don’t work for.

Next, a heat pump must worth the price. You might be proud of your expensive product but if it doesn’t fully support your need and accommodate everything within the house, the product is definitely lacking.

Lastly, find the answer to this question: Does the maker sell its product with installation service and if yes is it offered in great quality?

Installation of a heat pump is an intricate process, which is to say that a layman should never attempt at doing it all on their own. Professional and quality installation will ensure only the best results to enjoy in the run.

Best Heat Pump Brand Reviews

When in doubt, you require a guide. This is what we’re trying to do: To give you an insight into what you should buy. Again, this is just a guide, a version of a list of the best heat pump brands you can take into consideration. The end decision, after all, is in your hands.

Tempstar Heat Pumps

Tempstar offers arguably the best warranties out on the market. Some of its models come with Wi-Fi Observer control, which allows you to monitor and adjust temperature remotely via a smartphone. It has three levels of performance, which generally comply with the ratings of efficiency.

It comes in a good-looking case (capable of resisting both scratches and corrosion) consisting of galvanized steel finished with a bake powder coat. Tempstar also makes air purifiers, air handlers, and furnaces, all of which works well when combined with the brand’s heat pumps. As a national brand, service and parts for Tempstar products can be found across the country.

However, the SEER rating of Tempstar’s most efficient models, the TVH8 and the TCH9, is of 19, which is lower than that of some other brands. Models such as XP25 is much more efficient given their relatively higher SEER rating. As such, Tempstar’s aforementioned models would not meet the needs of those living in areas where heat and humidity are at their extreme in summer. Also, some of Tempstar heat pump models are loud, at 69 decibels. This is rather high compared to some other brands.

Goodman Heat Pumps

Goodman has a great combo of low price (it manufactures some of the lowest in the industry) and quality. Said quality may not be outstanding when compared to other brands but it makes for excellent value coupled with its price. Goodman heat pumps come with pretty good warranties.

They cover failed compressor as well as full unit replacement. All models of Goodman heat pump are Energy Star-certified. Parts and installers are easily accessible considering that Goodman is a national brand. Heat pumps from Goodman work with R-410A, which poses less significant impact on the environment compared to older versions of residential HVAC refrigerants.

Shaky dependability record for more than 10 years, however, turns into a great source of concern about Goodman. Their lineup is reduced to just 4 models, making consumers’ options limited, while other brands offer more than just 4 models.

The DSZC18, Goodman’s most efficient model, only has an SEER rating of 18, making it lower in efficiency rating compared to other brands. Parts warranties from Goodman, unfortunately, do not come with labor on repairs option for products exceeding the 12-month industry standard. This only means that you will have to pay more for repair bills.

Daikin Heat Pumps

Daikin is a manufacturer that also makes a variety of products through its many divisions in addition to its line of air conditioner, including oil hydraulics, defense systems, filtration systems, and chemicals. Daikin heat pumps are all offered in low price and this is backed by a similarly low price for installation service. Their products are known for their reliability and durability. What’s even more interesting is the fact that Daikin heat pumps are eligible for tax rebates. The products are also hailed for their high efficiency rate. The staff of Daikin customer representative is respectable in the way they do their jobs.

Daikin heat pumps may have high SEER rating, reliable compressor and parts, as well as durable chassis. However, the brand is only accounted for a small percentage of the market share. This can only mean that most people tend to avoid purchasing them. Also, while the customer support is knowledgeable and dependable, most will find it confusing sometimes owing to the language barrier.

In relation to this, consequently, some may find Daikin installation and operation procedures difficult to follow. Daikin warranties are average at best and even that comes without coverage for labor. In addition, warranties can only be extended once the product has been registered—most customers forgot to register their products. Parts are oftentimes model-specific; generic ones typically don’t work for most.

Maytag Heat Pumps

Maytag heat pumps are manufactured with a focus on quality and exceptionality. The Maytag M120, for example, is designed with a combination between a high HSPF rating and a 2-phase operation. This makes the model an excellent choice for places in coastal and humid areas.

Every Maytag unit has exceptional looks and a build that is meant to last long, all of which contain premium parts and dehumidification abilities. Although Maytag implements a 2-phase operation, its SEER rating is not all different from a heat pump of a 1-phase operation, which is disappointing. Its heating capability is also questionable, which is why this brand seems to be perfect for humid areas.

In addition to its great humidification system, Maytag heat pumps also have a higher rating for its BTU. Its quality can be witnessed from its premium build and its consistent output is dependable and reliable most of the time. However, the units are short on satisfying heating capability and their SEER rating is relatively low, which could be something that might be a big letdown for you when considering this brand.

York Heat Pumps

York heat pumps can be installed in places without ductwork systems, which is one great advantage for anyone investing in this brand. This also means that installation can cost lower. York heat pumps are known as mini-split heat pumps, which can work very well with radiant floor heating systems.

York heat pumps are noticeably more efficient in their use of energy. The units can also be put to work all year round because they use minimum energy. Compared to traditional cooling and heating systems, Maytag heat pumps are way more friendly toward the environment and the heat generated by the units are distributed evenly all around the house. They do not produce poisonous fumes, which can get into your house, and as such they are considerably safer for use.

However, installation may take more time, resulting in your installation bills going up to $1,000 at the very least. Maytag heat pumps are also more efficient in areas with temperate climates without any chance of extreme changes.

American Standard & Trane Heat Pumps

American Standard and Trane heat pumps are all manufactured under the same parent company. Because of this, their features can be regarded identical with one another.

Their units implements AccuComfort, a technology of variable-capacity compressor. With this technology, the unit can run at a capacity that is exactly needed in accordance with the conditions both indoor and outdoor for optimal heating and cooling. Through a system called Nexia, you can control temperature remotely by a smartphone.

The compression used in the units is excellent. However, repair might take longer as you will have to wait for the required part. AccuLink, the system that connects the units with a smartphone, may sound like a great feature. However, its implementation may also result in mechanical issues.

If you ask about whether to choose American Standard or Trane heat pumps, the answer would be that you can choose any one of the two. The units of the two brands are 99% identical with one another. Trane, however, offers some models that are in the category of high-end with exclusive and cutting edge features.

Carrier & Bryant Heat Pumps

Carrier and Bryant heat pumps are all manufactured under the same parent company. Because of this, their features can be regarded identical with one another.

The brands offer a wide range of models for customers to choose from, all with varying performance and efficiency ratings. This ultimately allows you to choose one regardless of the climates in the areas where you live. The units’ capacities also vary, making it easier for you to choose one whose BTU rating fits the construction, layout, and size of your house. Their durability is also reliable and with good maintenance, they can last for more than 20 years.

The two are national brands, meaning parts and installation will not be a problem whatsoever. Also, their units are pretty flexible in terms of handling, making even an unauthorized technician (provided that they are qualified) capable of repairing them.

Their units, however, are pretty costly. Also, despite being the first in the to introduce variable-speed heat pumps into the market, Bryant heat pumps, specifically, have been surpassed by many other units from different brands as the others have started introducing units with cooling systems that are more efficient. In terms of warranties they don’t fare too well either, seeing that there are other brands out there offering ones with longer periods.

Armstrong Air Heat Pumps

Armstrong Air heat pumps are known for being very efficient with their units equipped with 2-stage compressor. This allows for cooling for a long duration. Rooms can be kept cool while at the same time efficiency is maintained without consuming much energy and being too loud when operating. The units are all Energy Star-certified, making them efficient in using energy.

They are also affordable and their features make for great value for your money. Granted, newer models are slightly more expensive than their older models but that price comes with more efficiency in tow. Armstrong Air warranties are also offered for a long period.

However, their heat pump units are bulky and heavy, making it imperative to get a help for transporting and installation. Once put in proper place, however, you no longer have to remove or relocate them at all. A professional may have to get involved in setting up the air conditioner because they are not easy to handle on your own.

Their efficiency can only be expected at its maximum result once they have been properly set up. A setup done without proper management will only result in inefficiency and the units’ functionality might get compromised because of that as well.

Furthermore, if you wish to support a room that is big with this brand of heat pump, you might want to install more than one unit of conditioner. What this means is that there is a big chance that you might end up having to spend more and this is not something considered cost effective either.

Armstrong Air’s older models of heat pumps do not come with 2-stage compressor. They are also a lot noisier than the newer model, making them less than comfortable when used. Specifically the 4SCU13LB model does not come with Energy Star certification. It is then not too efficient in energy use.
