Ruud Heat Pump Cost, Reviews & Buying Guide

If you are looking for more affordable heat pump unit with higher than average quality, you should look at Ruud models. This heat pump line has been around for decades and leading the development for more efficient and environmental friendly units.

You will read some Ruud heat pump reviews by homeowners who already installed the unit at their home. The reviews will make you aware of the strength and limitation of certain Ruud products. That way, you will be able to make better buying choice. Reviews also inform you about the kind of unit that actually fits your needs.

To encourage you in doing better budget management, Ruud heat pump prices will be discussed as well. As you know the price for a single heat pump unit varies due to various conditions. It can be because the model that you are choosing or due to its size. Without further ado, let’s learn more about Ruud’s products.

Features, Pros, and Cons

Why do people purchase Ruud’s heat pump units? There are plenty of interesting features that its lineup has to offer for homeowners. Of course the features can be hit and miss, however knowing them will help you getting to know this brand even more.

1. Inverter-guided Technology

Ruud has started to introduce inverter-guided technology in its product. This technology allows for variability in the heat pump’s capacity. It means that you no longer have to face extreme fluctuations in heating and cooling. The result is more accurate temperature balance. Humidity within the indoor part of your house is also highly controlled. That way, the house becomes more comfortable.

2. 3-step Cycle

A model in Ruud’s lineup has already introduced 3-step cycle within its system, from low to high then to overdrive. Normally, you will only find the low and high steps. During overdrive step, the indoor and outdoor coils’ refrigerant is quickly cycled between the two coils by compressor. This mode enables heat pump system to draw heat from outside to heat up the indoor part.

3. EcoNet Technology

The EcoNet is control panel for your heat pump. It can be attached to your wall for easier control when you are at home. This tool is Wi-Fi enabled too. You can install application on your phone then monitor and control your heat pump even if you are far away from home.

4. 10-year Replacement Warrant

This particular feature is available for the line’s Ultra models. Since other manufacturers have started putting on 10-year replacement warranty for their products, Ruud also starts to do similar thing with its high-end models first. Buyers who experience system failure within 10 years after purchasing the unit can get condensing unit replacement.

5. Double Fuel System

To support usage in cold climates, most Ruud’s models are equipped with double fuel system. Homeowner is recommended to pair the heat pump with gas furnace (which means paying additional cost). When the temperature is below freezing point, gas furnace will take over from the electric fuel system for higher efficiency.

6. Cabinet Design

One of the biggest issues in owning heat pump is maintenance. Homeowners reported that they have a hard time trying to clean, do maintenance work, and repair heat pump unit simply because the inner parts are hard to be accessed. Some Ruud models have cabinet design that enables you to do any maintenance-related job with ease.

There are other advantages of buying a Ruud unit in addition to getting variety of innovative features. First, the price of Ruud’s unit is likely to be cheaper than other comparable products in the market. Price issue often drives homeowners away from installing a heat pump. In addition to that, the durability of Ruud’s unit is also remarkable.

Unfortunately there is a percentage of buyers who filed a complaint to the company due to malfunctions, particularly refrigerant leaking. It usually happens after three years of installation. People also complain about the fact that Ruud’s warranty is not comprehensive. It does not cover Freon change and costs of labor.

Ruud Model’s Review and Recommendation

There are several Ruud models that receive great reviews and highly recommended by current and past users. Let’s take a look at this list.

1. Value 13PJL

13PJL is known as a value product from Ruud, its SEER and HSPF ratings are indeed only within market’s standard. Still, buyers have reported that this heat pump unit is still running smoothly without issue even after four years. An important thing is not to install oversize unit within your small home.

2. Value 15PJL

This unit is another value product from Ruud that receives nods from buyers. Like 13PJL, the ratings of SEER and HSPF of this product are not exactly high. Buyers have reported that this unit is capable of cutting down the cost of home operation by half, though. It is definitely a worthy investment.

3. Achiever Two-stage RP16

RP16 has SEER rating of 16 while its HSPF rating is 9, which is above market standard. The compressor works in two stages during heating and cooling for precise control. It is designed to operate quietly by adding composite base pan on its structure. This unit is also resistant to salt water which means you can install it in coastal area. It is an Energy Star certified unit.

4. Achiever UP15

This unit has quite similar qualities to RP16 with similar SEER and HSPF ratings (16 and 9). However, the compressor works in one stage instead of two. Nonetheless, the efficiency of UP15 is still being raved about by current and past users. Like RP16, it already receives certification from Energy Star.

5. Achiever Plus UP17

UP17 is one of superior units within Ruud’s current lineup. The SEER rating of this unit is 18.5 while its HSPF number is 8.5. The compressor works in three stages in order to deliver more precise temperature balance and comfort. EcoNet technology is equipped within this unit. It works quietly and is also salt resistant.

6. Ultra Variable Speed UP20

The most capable unit of Ruud’s lineup is definitely the UP20. This unit has SEER rating of 20 and rated 11 in HSPF. Its compressor works at variable speed to deliver the most accurate temperature and humidity control. It is also equipped with EcoNet technology. When purchasing this, you get 10-year replacement warrant.

Ruud Heat Pump Prices by Model

When you are shopping for a Ruud’s unit, the first thing that you need to think about is which model that you are going to purchase. Every model has different features and those features determine their fitness to be placed within a certain environment.

As an example, if you are living in a home but having planned to move within the next few year then perhaps the more economical choice for you would be the Value models (such as 13JPL and 15JPL). The total cost for unit and installation varies from$4,500 to $4,700. The unit is proven to work well after few years without high maintenance cost.

Meanwhile, the middle tier model such as Achiever RP15 and RP16 are more suitable for installation within Zone 5 area that has cool climate. The unit’s price would be around $1,870. However, you need to pay additional $3,700 for the installation process. The price might spike up if you add extra features, although that might not be necessary for installation within this area since the climate is not extreme.

RP17 is a unit that is recommended for Zone 1 and 2 that are known to have hot climate. The unit itself is likely to cost you slightly under $2,000. For the installation, you need to pay additional $3,700. Even if the price is quite high, you are likely to get your investment back since this unit is quite renowned for its high efficiency.

For extreme cold weather like in Zone 6 and 7, you will be recommended to purchase UP20 model which is the company’s high-end product. The price for a unit would be around $2,200. To install the unit, you will need to add $4,000 to that amount. This price is very likely to increase especially because for those zones the unit is highly suggested to be paired with AC system and gas furnace for efficiency.

Ruud Heat Pump Prices by Size

Once you have decided on a model to purchase, you need to start considering the size. A model will come in several size options. You have to find the perfect one that will be able to cover your house adequately. If the unit is too small, the output is not going to be satisfying. Meanwhile, if the unit is too big, you have to suffer for high installation cost. It is not going to be comfortable either

Small family houses require only 1.5 to 2 ton unit. The coverage for 1.5 ton unit would be around 600 to 1000 square feet, while the 2 ton unit is from 1001 to 1300 square feet. The system price would vary from $1,370 to $1,540. For the installation, you need to add $3,100 to that amount.

Medium size houses are likely to work well with 2.5 to 3 ton units. A 2.5 ton unit is able to cover 1301 to 1600 square feet space. Meanwhile, the 3 ton unit can provide coverage for 1601 to 1900 square feet area. To purchase the system without installation, you need to pay $1,770 to slightly under $2,000. Professional installation will cost you extra $3,700.

Bigger houses will need 3.5 to 4 ton units. If your house’s size is around 1901 to 2200 square feet, then a 3.5 ton unit is sufficient. However, you may need a 4 ton unit if the house’s size is around 2201 to 2600 square feet. The unit’s price for 3.5 ton unit is around $2,200 while for a 4 ton unit is $2,600. The cost of professional installation is about $3,700.

For very big size houses or even office, 5 ton unit is recommended. This unit is able to cover 2601 to 3200 square feet space. One unit will cost you around $3,150 which is still quite affordable if compared with market’s standard price. To install the unit, you will likely to pay above $3,800 simply because big unit at big space will need additional features to help the air disperse.
